From Student to Teacher: Faieq takes on the 100Wave Challenge

Faieq Samodien was one of the first students who walked through the doors of 9Miles Project in 2013. Like many youth in his community, he faced tough challenges early in life—struggling with learning and eventually dropping out of school. But what makes Faieq’s story so powerful is not where he started, but how far he’s come.

Despite the odds, Faieq remained committed to 9Miles programmes. Over the past 10 years, through mentorship, life skills training, and surf therapy, Faieq has transformed his life and is now:

– An internationally accredited surf coach

– A surfboard repair technician

– A qualified First Aider – having responded to emergencies and saved lives in his community

– Fully licensed driver and PDP driver

– Qualified PADI diver

– Internationally accredited swimming instructor and life saver.

– Permanently employed and actively giving back. He now teaches children how to swim safely and with confidence at Little Mermaids Swim School

Faieq is not just surviving—he is thriving, and he’s bringing others along with him. He has become a pillar in his community, helping other youth learn surfboard repair skills and creating pathways to economic independence. He has mentored and empowered many young girls through surf therapy, preparing them for regional and national surf competitions.

He is a true example of what 9Miles stands for: long-term commitment, transformation, and community empowerment.

“Everyone is perfect for their purpose. I stayed with the programme because I believed that—even if it took time—I would find mine. And now I help others find theirs.” – Faieq

This year, Faieq is taking on the #100WaveChallenge to raise R18,000 for the project that changed his life. His goal? To help other youth find purpose, just as he did.
