Who says you need money to enjoy a good shopping spree?
Certainly not the nearly 200 households who joined us for our latest CAB Day (Come and Buy Without Money) on Friday 24 July at the Strandfontein Community Hall.
While the “doors” officially opened at 12:00pm, the excitement arrived much earlier. By 11:30am, families were already queuing waiting to register and receive shopping tokens, chatting with neighbours, catching up with friends and wondering what treasures they might find. Meanwhile, our team had been hard at work since sunrise, transforming the hall into a one-of-a-kind shopping experience where the only currency accepted was dignity.
Rack by rack, table by table, donated clothing, shoes, warm blankets, duvets, towels, household essentials and everyday necessities were intentionally displayed, not as handouts, but as freedom.
Because that’s what Community CAB Day is all about.
Every family had the opportunity to browse and choose the items that would best suit their home. It might sound like a small difference, but for someone facing difficult circumstances, the ability to choose can mean everything.
And when the gates opened, the shopping began.
Children excitedly pointed out jackets in their favourite colours. Parents searched for warm winter clothing, bedding, shoes and household essentials. Volunteers became personal shoppers, helping families find the right sizes, carrying bags, and celebrating every “I found it!” moment along the way.
The smiles said plenty, but some words stayed with us long after the last shopping bag was packed.
“I was sitting this morning wondering how I was going to provide for my family,” one mother shared quietly.
Another simply smiled and said, “This is an answered prayer.”
Those moments are why Community CAB Day exists.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, volunteers, and supporters, nearly 200 households from Strandfontein, Bayview, San Remo, Camp Road, and surrounding communities left with more than clothing and household essentials. They left knowing they had been seen, valued, and cared for.
One of our favourite moments came right at the end of the day.
As we packed away the last tables, there was almost nothing left to pack.
The jackets had found new owners. The blankets were on their way to warm homes. Kitchenware was ready for family dinners again. Shoes that had been sitting in cupboards were already walking someone home.
That’s the beautiful thing about generosity, it doesn’t collect dust. It gets to work.
Community CAB Day isn’t simply about redistributing donated goods. It’s about restoring confidence, creating choice, reducing waste, and reminding families that asking for help should never come at the cost of their dignity.
At 9Miles Project, we often say that small acts create big waves.
On this day, those waves reached nearly 200 households.
