"Relaunching Instinct in my hometown where I started it and incorporating revenue from every sale to empower underprivileged students is a dream come true. Business can solve big social problems but if I can just help with one small problem, the life trajectory of a student, then my mission will be fulfilled."
Established In September 2016
On the West Coast of South Africa lies a coastal village called Elands Bay – home to South Africa’s best left-hand surf spot – and yet the community has very few positive activities or opportunities for vulnerable children and youth.
The Elands Bay Surf Project was established in September 2016 when our team from Cape Town collaborated with The Board Box and “10 Days 10 Nights” and ventured to Elands Bay to host a Life Empowerment Surf Clinic for the youth within the community. As a result of the success of their Clinic (as well as recognising that there were very little positive recreational activities for youth in the area) the team collaborated with various individuals who grasped the vision and identified the need to make the youth development programme a permanent feature. Elands Bay has since become a branch of the 9Miles Project.
life empowerment, mentorship & surfing lessons
Our Elands Bay kids are so hungry for programmes and positive mentorship, and we have seen an influx of new children attending surf and life skills programmes -often arriving at dawn, and leaving at dusk! During school holiday programmes we have an average of 60 children attending programmes and the programme has moved from a 6-weekly outreach to running five days per week.
These beautifully exuberant children (as well as the entire community) have captured our hearts and we are excited to see our plans for the area unfold.
