In the small fishing town of Elands Bay, where generations of families have lived alongside the ocean and opportunities can often feel as distant as the horizon, young people face a choice every day: allow their circumstances to define them or dare to dream beyond them.

Eleven-year-old Taylom Blankenberg has chosen to dream.

When Taylom first arrived at 9Miles Project three years ago, he was a shy nine-year-old boy who rarely spoke up. He preferred to stand quietly on the sidelines, watching the world around him rather than stepping into it. Like many young people growing up in under-resourced communities, he carried fears and doubts about what he was capable of achieving.

But at 9Miles, he found something every young person deserves: a safe space, a family, and people who believed in him long before he fully believed in himself.

Through mentorship, encouragement, and countless hours spent learning in and out of the water, Taylom slowly began to emerge from his shell. The ocean became more than a playground. It became a classroom where he learned courage, resilience, and confidence.

Today, the boy who once avoided challenges actively seeks them out.

Growing up in a small fishing village, it can be easy to believe that life will always stay the same. Yet Taylom has learned that every wave carries an opportunity and every challenge presents a chance to grow. He approaches each day with determination, seeing obstacles not as barriers but as stepping stones.

His dream is simple yet powerful: to become the best surfer he can be.

Every session in the water brings him closer to that goal. Those who have watched him over the years have seen remarkable growth, not only in his surfing ability but in his character. He is hardworking, dependable, always on time, and one of the first to offer a helping hand when someone needs support.

Perhaps his greatest achievement, however, is the leader he is becoming.

Recognising his growth, the team at 9Miles appointed Taylom as a youth leader within the programme. It was a role he earned through his commitment, kindness, and willingness to serve others. The transformation has been inspiring to witness. The once-quiet boy now motivates those around him, encourages younger participants, and leads by example.

He is learning that true leadership is not about being the loudest voice in the room. It is about lifting others up, showing respect, and making people feel seen and valued.

Taylom loves rugby, soccer, and surfing. He attends Engelbrecht Primary School and dreams not only of personal success but of becoming a positive influence in his community. While he still admits that listening can sometimes be a challenge, he embraces every opportunity to learn and improve.

What makes Taylom’s story so special is not simply that he wants a brighter future. It is that he is actively creating one.

In a community where many young people face difficult circumstances, Taylom refuses to let those circumstances determine who he will become. Instead, he chooses growth. He chooses courage. He chooses to believe that his future can be bigger than the limits often placed upon it.

As South Africa celebrates the end of Youth Month, Taylom reminds us that potential exists in every child. Sometimes all it takes is a safe space, a caring mentor and someone willing to say, “We believe in you.”

From the shores of Elands Bay, a young leader is rising. One wave, one challenge, and one opportunity at a time. And you can support his journey.
